Saddam Hussain was hanged today morning 30th December 2006 after a long trail of more than two years. He was captured on 13th Decemebr 2004. He was accused of killing 148 Shias. It was really an unexpected news for everybody as he was given a time of 30 days. What could be the reason, may be pressure by the American Government.

How will the Muslim community react to this? In India it was declared has hartal, and there was a protest world wide. Anyway that was really expected by all.

• 1957: Joins underground Baath Socialist Party.
• 1958: Arrested for killing his brother-in-law, a Communist. Spends six months in prison
• October 7, 1959: On Baath assassination team that ambushes Iraqi strongman General Abdel-Karim Kassem in Baghdad, wounding him. Saddam, wounded in leg, flees to Syria then Egypt
• February 8, 1963: Returns after Baath takes part in coup that overthrows and kills Kassem
• July 30, 1968: Becomes chief of internal security under President Ahmed Hassan al-Bakr, his cousin
• July 16, 1979: Takes over as president from al-Bakr, launches major purge of Baath members
