Maldives Election – Run Off Called09 Oct
The results of Presidential Election in Maldives could not give the New President for Maldives. Non of the candidates could bag more than 50% of the votes, so the citizens have go for the Run Off Polls in next few days.
The existing President of Maldives, President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom of Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party has got the highest number of votes, 71,774 ( 40.6% ) votes while his nearest opposition party candidate Mohamed Nasheed has got 44,315 ( 25.1% ) votes. Former Attorney General Hassan Saeed has taken third place receiving 29,656 ( 16.8% ) and former Finance Minister billionaire Gasim Ibrahim received 27,128 ( 15.4% ). IDP’s Umar Naseer got 2,472 ( 1.4% ) while SLP leader and Male’ member Ibrahim Ismail received only 1,382 ( 0.8% ).
In a press conference, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom said that he will surely win the Run Off polls as there are many reasons that he could not reach the 51% mark. The turnout for this election was historic. More than 85% of voters casted their vote. The final results will be annouced by the Election commission by 11.30pm tonight and probably the date for the run off elections too. The coming days will be critical as both the candidates will need to work very hard to convert the votes that they have missed and the votes that were bagged by the other 4 candidates. President Gayoom said that he is very happy with the results of this election which clearly shows that he is still the most popular person for the the President’s post. He thanked his supporters and the party for the effort they had put to get these votes and expects to win the run off elections
The Run Off Polls will be between Maumoon Abdul Gayoom of DRP and Mohamed Nasheed of MDP.
