Hulhumale, Future of Maldives30 Mar
I have been working in the Republic of Maldives for the past 4 years. Its really a beautiful place, very nice place to work and especially my employer. Maldives is a group of Island, you can find more info about Maldives at my website dedicated to Maldives
Today was a holiday for me and I was going around the Capital city Male’ and just took some snaps. Then I decided to go to Hulhumale, which is an artificial island, may be the future capital of Maldives. This is a very big island, compared to Male’. Male’ is very congested and now its developing vertically. All the newly constructed buildings are 10 storied. There is no more space and now we can see all the old buildings being demolished and new multi-storied buildings coming up.
To go to Hulhumale there is a separate Jetty, after the airport jetty. The boat service is operated by MTCC, and the boats and bigger than the one which is used to travel to airport. Approximately about 100 passengers can travel in this boat and the ticket fare is just Mrf 5.00. It takes about 20 minutes to reach Hulhumale’ from Male’.
I got down at the jetty and walked out, and saw a Swaraj Mazda bus to carry people to the main residential place. I could not get a seat, as they do not allow more than the seating capacity of the bus. I decided to walk as the sun was not much hot and it was around 05.30 pm. I took just 10 mins, very casual walk to reach the residential area, and the beach is also near by. There I saw a Bank Of Maldives, branch with ATM facility, STO super market, a pharmacy, and the Government Hospital. Dhiraagu also has a office there and the other telecom company, Wataniya telecoms, main office also located here.
This island will be the future of Maldives and its also connected to the Airport island, Hulhule’.
I came back after spending some time in the beach and took some snaps and I could even get the sunset shot.
Friday evening was different today.

Right now the population of Hulhumale is around 3000 and is expected to grow very rapidly as we can see new buildings comming up. The construction work of a school is also going on, which will be compleated very soon. The roads are excellent and it will be a real planned city. Trees are being planted and now its getting green. This island should be able to reduce the crowd in the capital city Male’. But people prefer to stay in Male’ even though the accomodation is very costly, because of convenience. Hopefully people will understand and start moving.
