Recently I got a chance to visit one of the Fish Processing Units in the Maldives. The company name is HMS Maldives, which is just 20 minutes travel from the capital island Male’. We left Male’ at about 10am for some official work. This factory is situated on an Island called Boduhuraa, which is besides the Four Seasons Resorts Maldives. Four Seasons resort is one of the best resorts in the Maldives which is located on an Island called Kudahuraa.

This fish processing unit is well equipped with all the latest facilities and equipments. They have their own Power plant and Water desalination plant and very strong Ice Plant. In Maldives, the fishing Industry and the Tourism Industry are the highest foreign exchange earners. There are about 9 Fish processing units, the biggest called MIFCO (Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited) which is owned by the government. Each Fish processing has its own quality control department and each consignment is fully checked to meet all the standards of Export.

There is very high demand of the processed fish from Japan and European countries like the United Kingdom, Germany and France. The best quality fish is exported and the other are used inside the country sold through local markets. Tuna fish is very popular among the locals in the Maldives as its a part of their daily food. Medicinally, Tuna fish has some good values.

If you are traveling to Maldives, make it a point to have Tuna fish and take some dried and tinned Tuna to your home, you will really enjoy it.
