Maldives Presidential Election Campaign Started

Presidential Elections in Maldives will be held before October 12 this year. President of Maldives, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has started the campaign for the coming election for his Party (DRP) this Friday at Alimas Carnival.

Lowest International call rates by Dhiraagu during Ramadan

Dhiraagu has announced a special rate for International calls i.e Mrf 1.99 per minute to India, Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia during Ramadan. This I feel is the lowest rate offered till now and you do not need to use 019 code, but 00 + the country code. This offer is available for 24 hours a day during Ramadan.

First 3G+ HSDPA Network in Maldives

Wataniya Telecoms is the first Mobile operator in the Maldives to offer 3G service. With this 3G service, you can make video phone calls, browse the Internet with high speed. The coverage is right now restricted to Male’, the capital of Maldives and nearby islands. I don’t think the service is operational full fledged. I tried using a sim of Wataniya in Male’ but I was not getting the 3G network. Dhiraagu will also soon launch the 3G service soon hopefully as I use a Dhiraagu connection

Chat with your friends with wChat from Wataniya Telecoms

Wataniya telecoms is another mobile service provider in Maldives. Wataniya has recently introduced a new service called wChat. With this service, Wataniya users can chat on a one-to-one basis or one-to-many in 6 different ‘chat rooms’. Registered wChat users can chat with anyone else in the chatting community at anytime, using their handset. Chat rooms cover a variety of different subjects from friends, jokes, and sport to movies, allowing customers to express their views or share thoughts on common areas of interest.

With the wChat service Wataniya customers can search for and make new friends, choosing whether to chat privately or join in a conversation with a group of other mobile users. A simple SMS of F send to 4141 will give a return SMS showing the wChat customer all his or her online contacts.

Get IGMH Doctor’s Schedule by sending an SMS

Dhiraagu has introduced a new service where Dhiraagu Mobile users can receive the  information related to the a particular Doctor or a specific Department of IGMH (Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital). This should be very helpful for the people in the Maldives.

To get IGMH OPD duty via SMS, simply send an SMS to 446 with the Keyword
IGMH followed by the first 3 letters of the information you require.

Each SMS sent to 446 will be charged Rf 1

Ishmeet Singh, Voice of India drowned in a Resort in Maldives

Shocking news, Ishmeeth Singh the winner of Voice of India, Ismeeth Singh, who had come to Maldives for a special show drowned and died while he was swimming an a lagoon of the resort he was staying. He had reached Male’ today and the show as planned at Alimas carnival on the coming Friday.

Independence day for Maldives – 26th July

Today Maldives celebrates its 43rd independence day. Maldives was also ruled by the Britisher’s and was granted independence on the 26th July 1965. You can find a detailed information about the Independence day here.

This year, Indians in Maldives will be celebrating its Independence day In Male on the August 15th. India Club is planning to organize some cultural programs on this occasion

How to send your luggage in Cargo from Maldives in Air India

If you are moving back home from Maldives to India, then you will be having lots of luggage and its not advisable to carry along with you. The best way is to send through Cargo. The procedure is very simple and the cost is very less.

First get your things packed well in boxes and count the number of boxes

Then go to Cyprea Travels in Male’ who are the authorized agents for Air India Cargo and tell them the number of boxes and the destination details. They will give you labels for the number of boxes you have.

Next you need to take all your goods to the Male’ International Airport cargo and get it weighed and get clearance from Customs and NSS. Then again from the Island aviation office you need to fill up a form and then come back again to Cyprea and make the payment according the weight. Then again you need to go back to the Cargo and hand over the Airway bills. You will get a copy of the airway bill. Usually the next day, the goods to be sent to the destination.
