Teachers Strikes end in Maldives

The indefinite strike by the local teachers in Maldives was withdrawn after agreeing to give the Government one month time to come up with a solution. The strike was to increase the salary of the teachers

Finance Minister Gasim said last Sunday said that if the teachers’ salaries were to be increased beginning next August then they would need Rf196 million and that the funds were not available from the current Government budget. He also said that it can only be done by submitting a supplementary budget to the Majlis. However, Minister Gasim has not said whether a supplementary budget would be submitted or not so far.

Teachers in Maldives on strike today

The school teachers in Maldives are on indefinite strike from today. Teaching is fully effected. Teachers are demanding higher salary. Its really true that the teachers are not paid well here.

Its really true that the salary scale for the teachers are very low but they have the option of taking private tutions. If a teacher needs to save some money, then he / she needs to take private classes or tutions after the working hours. To get a teachers job in Maldives, now a days the recruitment is done through some recruiting agencies and they collect about US$ 500 for this service.

Taxi fare increased in Maldives

Recently due to the increase in the price in petrol, the taxi fares have been increased to MRF 25 from MRF 20. This was official announced last Friday. Its really burns paying this money, but we cannot do anything as the petrol prices have gone by MRF 3 per liter.

SAFF Victory Celebrations in Maldives

I was just moving around Male’ last Friday. I went for registering at the India Club and just walked around and took some video. Its very crowded on Fridays these days. Lots of expatriates come out as its the only off day for them
